What is monologue?
A character's thoughts presented aloud to the audience, or other characters. It is longer than regular scripted dialogue. The monologue often helps develop the character who's speaking.
The basic premise of this unit is for students to read an autobiographical or biographical text, discuss his/her findings with 'like' peers, then create a speech in the voice of the character which highlights the most significant events and influences of the person's life and explains their impact. This unit is adaptable for all junior high grade levels; the only variables among the grades are the depth of material, the length of time immersed in the material, and the variety of persons investigated.
